In the world of business, there are many trends, constantly being created and also constantly falling out of popularity. Many entrepreneurs seek to ride on the back of these trends in order to create new products or services, but here at Westcoast Direct Solutions, we believe this is a path to failure. True entrepreneurs don’t follow trends, they create them. The fact is, that if someone else is already doing something, they have a major head start on you, and unless you’ve got some wild cutthroat strategies up your sleeve, you’re going to get left behind.
At Westcoast Direct Solutions, when we took a look at any of the great successes of business, we saw that they all started with a great leap of innovation or thought. For instance when Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb, he genuinely changed the face of the world, and that lead to success. At one point his company supplied electricity for most of the US.
However this is not the only way to create trends. Many entrepreneurs take a different route, which is to take something that already exists, and figure out a way to modernize it. When Travis Kalanick created Uber in 2009, we already had a service to transport people around cities. In fact taxis were a deeply entrenched part of our culture, and accepted as just the normal way to do things. Uber managed to turn that on it’s head. In just six years the company is now estimated to be worth $50bn.
So as an entrepreneur, if we want to set a trend, we have to look at one of two options:
